The Model D is crafted from only the finest materials available today. Every component is designed and selected for its excellence, and every part is manufactured to the highest standard with one goal in mind: to deliver the finest sound quality and a flawless appearance
The Model D is a floor-standing loudspeaker system named after the renowned Steinway & Sons concert grand piano — the pinnacle of all musical instruments.
Model D is an active stereo system consisting of a pair of floor-standing loudspeakers and dedicated power amplifiers, all of which are controlled by an audio processor.
The D Series floor-standing loudspeakers feature an open dipole design that radiates sound in two directions, front and rear. Each loudspeaker is 213 cm tall and weighs an impressive 174 kg.
Steinway & Sons Model D systems do not have a loudspeaker cabinet. Instead, the drivers are attached to a stylish and solid front panel.
Combined with today's best drivers, this solution delivers the most natural bass reproduction and an exceptionally open, detailed and dynamic sound, completely free from the muddiness and colouration caused by the cabinet. Like Steinway & Sons musical instruments, the D-series dipole loudspeakers interact with the listening room.
Each loudspeaker incorporates four 30.5 cm diameter low-frequency drivers with honeycomb glass fibre cones, two 12.7 cm diameter magnesium midrange drivers, and AMT, which are responsible for impressive high frequencies.
The AMT high-frequency driver, which has a wavy Mylar cone, was created specifically for the Model D. The driving force is distributed across the entire surface of the cone, enabling it to track the musical signal with supernatural precision. Its large surface area provides excellent cooling for the driver and minimises the risk of power compression. This extraordinary driver delivers powerful, smooth, linear and dynamic high-frequency reproduction with amazing transparency.
The magnesium midrange driver features a fully non-magnetic basket and a powerful yet compact magnetic system, created using patented Hexadym technology. This impressive driver can reproduce frequencies from 200 to 2000 Hz, and can operate up to 8000 Hz without any distortion!
The extremely large low-frequency drivers deliver rich, full sound, while the bass energy is acoustically dampened at the sides to minimise the usual sound reflections from the room's side walls.
With a frequency range of 20 Hz to 22 kHz and a maximum sound level of 117 dB, the Model D reproduces any music in any room with true accuracy.
The drivers are mounted on a monolithic 'cult' frame, which is made from a single piece of aluminium weighing 300 kg. The frame undergoes 170 hours of meticulous, high-precision machining to ensure unrivalled acoustic quality and long-term mechanical stability in the most extreme environmental conditions.
Each Model D system is the product of painstaking work involving 170 hours of precision machining and around three weeks of manual assembly.
Steinway Lyngdorf amplifiers are designed above all else to reproduce music. Regardless of price or size, no other amplifiers are capable of conveying the feeling of a real concert – the unique sensation of being present in the place where the recording was made.
Each Model D loudspeaker comes equipped with its own powerful amplifier module consisting of several amplifiers with a total power output of 800 watts and an active digital crossover filter.
The Model D's built-in amplifiers utilise advanced digital technology and the most stable, reliable and high-quality components, providing highly efficient sound signal processing and achieving remarkable musical quality and a lifelike dynamic range.
The power amplifier units in the Model D are fully digital and based on patented signal processing technology and proprietary EQUlBlT™ output modules, which were first used in the renowned Lyngdorf Millennium amplifier. They use an open-loop circuit design with no feedback whatsoever. As only digital processing can realise the full potential of digital amplification, all signal processing is 100% digital.
Like all Steinway & Sons amplifiers, D-series power amplifiers are optimised for music reproduction and boast an impressive signal-to-noise ratio of 113 dB — the highest rating available today.
This ensures linearity and extremely low distortion at all volume levels, as well as a fully digital signal path, eliminating the need for analogue-to-digital or digital-to-analogue conversion. The end outcome – most importantly – is stunningly clear and articulate sound, with a fantastic soundstage and dynamics.
The most frequently overlooked factor in music reproduction is the colouration imparted to the sound by the listening space itself. Acoustic colouration is most often perceived as strong fluctuations in bass levels in different parts of the room.
The acoustic colouring of a room depends on its size and how much its surfaces and furniture reflect or absorb sound.
The sound produced by a loudspeaker depends largely on its location in the room and the listener's position.
Even the best loudspeaker can only be optimised for perfect performance in one type of room and from one listening position.
This is where patented RoomPerfect technology takes a giant leap towards perfection. RoomPerfect takes measurements and creates a complete, three-dimensional map of the room's acoustic properties and colouration for the given speaker placement and preferred listening positions. Using this information, RoomPerfect is able to calculate a correction that neutralises the tonal colouration of the room.
RoomPerfect calibration for the Model D can be performed using the impressive head unit processor or other Steinway & Sons processors. This puts into practice the system approach espoused by Steinway Lyngdorf.
As with all digital signal processing in Steinway Lyngdorf systems, this calibration takes place entirely in the digital domain.
Thanks to Room Perfect technology, the full beauty of the D model's sound is revealed in any room.
Steinway Lyngdorf's proprietary Digital Link technology is used to transmit signals in the Model D system.
This is a high-resolution, proprietary switching device designed for transmitting encoded audio and control signals between processors and amplifiers. The signal remains digital and uninterrupted throughout its entire journey until it reaches the amplifier output.
Combining digital amplification technology with digital processing in Steinway & Sons stereo and surround sound processors and patented Steinway Link technology ensures a high-resolution, energy-efficient and lossless transmission path for the purest possible sound
OTHER CORE BRAND TECHNOLOGIESThe Model D is the pinnacle of aesthetic and technological achievement among Hi-End acoustic systems
The Model D is crafted from only the finest materials available today. Each component is designed and selected for its excellence, with the highest quality parts manufactured with a single goal in mind: to produce the best possible sound quality and flawless appearance. The creation of each Model D system involves 170 hours of precision machining and approximately three weeks of hand assembly
Steinway Lyngdorf loudspeakers boast a beautiful, sparkling finish made using the same piano lacquer as the renowned Steinway & Sons grand pianos, making them unique in the world.
The front panel of the Model D is covered in authentic Steinway piano lacquer. The panel is polished to a deep, sparkling black finish on all sides.
In accordance with Steinway & Sons' traditions, a single coat of polymer lacquer is initially applied to a thickness of 1 mm. This is then sanded, polished and waxed until the thickness is reduced to 0.6 mm.
All lacquered wooden surfaces on Steinway Lyngdorf loudspeakers are finished with the same polyester resin coating that craftsmen at the Steinway & Sons factory in Hamburg use to protect and finish the wooden surfaces of musical instruments. This polymer formula was specially developed for Steinway & Sons.
The volume control wheel and buttons on the head unit and remote control, along with all the other gold surfaces on the Model D, have a 24-carat gold coating.
Before applying gold, brass is treated with a thin protective layer of atomised nickel. This process enhances the material's nobility and ensures the durability of the coating, providing resistance to external influences. Upon request, these surfaces can be chrome-plated instead of gold-plated.
The standard Model D is presented to the viewer in the brand's signature noble black colour, covered with sparkling piano lacquer.
However, the Model D is unique, just as its future owners' tastes and preferences can be. Therefore, special versions of the system can be made to order in various colours and with unique solid wood and veneer finishes.
The Model D is beautiful in any form, but it looks particularly intriguing and mysterious when hidden behind a veil of thin black strings.
These decorative, acoustically transparent strings stretch across the front and back of the frame, covering the speakers without interfering with their performance. They cascade down like streams of water, accentuating the sleek silhouette of the loudspeakers. During playback, the strings vibrate ever so slightly, creating the impression that they are responsible for the system's incredible sound and musicality.
